What clothes to wear for a successful professional photoshoot

Professional photoshoot

It can be hard to decide what clothes to wear for a successful professional photoshoot.

As a multimedia company, we understand this, and are always on hand to advise our clients on the best clothing to wear.

We have put together a few helpful tips which should give you an idea of the clothing style that is right for a professional photoshoot.

What is the aim of clothing in a professional photoshoot?

The clothes that are worn during a photoshoot are intended to make the subject the main focus of the image. They should also be flattering to the subject, whilst ensuring that no attention is detracted from them.

Clothes should not be an issue in a photograph – if comments are made about the subject’s outfit once the photo has been completed, the image has not achieved its objective.

What kind of clothing isn’t appropriate?

Any type of clothing that is so eye catching that it draws attention away from the subject should not be worn. As well as this, clothing that will not flatter the subject’s body type is not appropriate as it could potentially make them unhappy with the final photograph.

So, what kind of clothing should you be looking to wear for a professional photoshoot?

  1. Solid Coloured Clothing- Choose clothes that are a consistent colour, instead of patterned clothing. Avoid stripes, floral patterns and glitter. This will ensure that no attention is detracted from you.
  2. Muted, subdues tones- Ensure that the colours of your clothes are not too vivid. Choose subtle colours that again, will make sure not to take focus away from the subject.
  3. Choose similar tones for top and bottom- Wearing drastically different colours on your top and bottom halves will contribute to drawing focus away from you. Choose to wear either a light top and light bottoms or a dark top and dark bottoms. Don’t mix and match.
  4. Choose 1-3 colours for group portraits- If there is more than one person in the picture, make sure that all outfits are colour coordinated so they don’t clash with each other. As well, having too many different colours in the picture will take attention away from the people. Stick to having 1-3 colours of outfits featured in the photograph, and choose colours that will compliment each other.Professional photoshoot
  5. Wear a top with sleeves at least elbow length- Too much exposed skin will not look good in a photograph. Try to find a top that has sleeves at least to your elbows, this will be flattering and it will blend into the picture.
  6. Wear long bottoms- If you are wearing trousers, ensure that they are long because again, too much exposed skin will not look good in the photograph. Skirts should come down below the knees for the same reason.
  7. Choose dark footwear- Wearing dark coloured socks and shoes that don’t draw attention to themselves will look much better then brightly coloured footwear would.
  8. Keep jewellery simple- Keep it simple and minimalistic. This way it definitely will not stand out.
  9. Style hair normally- It may be tempting to try out a new style that you think will make you look a lot better in a photograph, but in reality it will make you feel more uncomfortable. It is best to wear your hair in a style that you are used to, so you will feel more yourself in front of a camera. If you are planning on getting your hair cut or styled, ensure you do it at least 2 weeks before the photoshoot so you have time to get used to the change.
  10. Make sure clothing fits- This might sound obvious, but make sure that your clothing fits you well and flatters you. If wearing leggings or tights, check for holes, and make sure none of your clothes have lint on them. You want to look your best in the photograph.
  11. Bring a few different options- Depending on what the photographs will be used for, you may find it useful to bring some different outfit choices. You could need different clothes depending on the weather or across different locations. Even if you don’t think you’ll need an outfit change, it is always best to be prepared.
  12. Think about the location- Obviously you would wear different clothing to a beach than you would at a ski slope. Consider what outfits are appropriate for the locations you know you will be shooting in.

Of course there are exceptions to these tips, for example if you are a stage performer you might be looking for a picture which reflects your career, and that would break most of the above rules!

 Be yourself

Perhaps the most important tip is to dress similarly to how you would normally. A professional photoshoot is not the right time to try on a new outfit that you have never worn before. The more comfortable and confident you feel, the better the image will turn out.

10 tips for choosing a corporate photographer

10 tips for choosing a corporate photographer

If you’re thinking about hiring a corporate photographer, how do you choose the right one for your project?  There are so many people that can ‘do the job’ for you, but the question is: can they do it well?

What to consider

While many factors depend on what you hope to achieve with the images, there are several important things to consider before you hire a corporate photographer. These will ensure that you know they understand your company and your brief so that your photographs will portray your business in the best light.

Here are 10 tips for choosing a corporate photographer:

1   How long have they been in the industry?

Time is Money

There is no right or wrong answer but the information will help you establish an understanding of the company, their experience and competence. The longer they have worked in the industry, the more experience they will have and the more clients they would have had the opportunity to work for.

2   Do they have the photographic style that you are looking for?

Your photographs will be used to portray your brand, so does the photographers’ style suit your company image? There are many different photographic styles to choose from, so it is useful to take a look at their portfolio to see if you like their work and that it is the correct photographic style for you. If you can’t imagine your company being part of the portfolio, look at other photographers.

3   How creative are they with ideas? Do they understand your company messages and your brief?

It is the experience and expertise of the photographer that will make a difference to your overall images. If they can help suggest great ideas for your photographs that fit in with your company and the messages that you want to portray, then it is likely that they understand your needs and will provide a fantastic photos.

Do you have an idea of what you want the images to do for you? If so, take your time to explain this with the Photographer. The Photographer should ask specific questions about your brief and your expectations so that they can gain a better understanding of your company and what you want to be conveyed through the images.

4   Are they enthusiastic about your project?

It is important that you feel the company is enthusiastic and interested in your project to ensure that you will be provided with a finished products that you love and images that will work for you. You should be able feel their excitement about getting the opportunity to work on a new project with you.

5   How organised do they seem?

There are often shooting dates and deadlines to meet, so you need to be confident that the corporate photographer that you hire can meet those deadlines. A successful photo shoot relies on good organisation, communication and preparation. Do you feel confident that they will meet deadlines? How is their time-keeping? If you do not feel that the photographer will meet your needs or deadlines then you should look to find someone that will.

6 Do they deliver consistent results?

Does the photographer deliver consistent results? Does their work and the images they produce flow nicely? Although you may prefer certain images to others, you shouldn’t notice any changes in the quality when looking at all of the shots. Decide if the quality is consistent before hiring the photographer for your project.

7    What type of companies have they previously worked with?

Does the Photographer specialise in producing work for a certain sector? Do they just work with one type of company or are they generic? Answers to these questions will give you a good idea about how they could help you and your business. If they have only ever worked on wedding photography but you require images for the IT sector then it would be better to look for a company that has dealt with the IT sector, or one that has worked with a range of companies. You are investing money in this photographer, so you want to ensure that you choose the right person who can produce the right images for your needs and specification.

8   Can you see testimonials from happy clients?

Does the Photographer promote testimonials from their happy clients? Can you easily find feedback from individuals or companies that the Photographer has produced work for? If Photographers are proud of their work, and value their customers, the chances are you will see testimonials from happy clients.

9   Do you like them?

Just like anything else, you want to know that you like the Photographer before you commission them. You will need to work with the photographer for some of the project, so it is important that you can communicate effectively.

We have met clients who feel very uncomfortable in front of a camera, they have always said that a highlight of our service is feeling reassured by the photographer. If you don’t have a great relationship with the photographer, or don’t get on, then it will become difficult to get finished products that you like and that you enjoyed making.

Why not arrange a meeting with the photographer to plan the shoot? Most photographers will be happy to meet you beforehand, to talk about the objectives for the images. This gives you the opportunity to decide if they would work effectively with your team.

10   Can they give you an estimated cost for your project?

Corporate photographer image

Although it is hard to give an exact price for a photography project until all of the details have been discussed, a good company will be able to give you ballpark figures about the cost of your photo shoot. You should expect the photographer to be able to provide you with creative ideas about how to get the most from your budget and will give an estimated timeframe and deadline of the photo shoot and the delivery of your final product.

Adding Photographs And Video To Your LinkedIn Profile

Would you like to know how to add photographs to your LinkedIn Profile?

Adding Photographs and Video to your LinkedIn profile.
Do you use LinkedIn?  Did you know that you can add photographs and also video to your LinkedIn profile?
If you’re not harnessing the power of uploading your images to LinkedIn you’re missing a huge marketing opportunity.
The really great news is that adding photographs and video to your LinkedIn profile is really easy to do.  Just follow the instructions below
which tell you how to do it!
Uploading videos and images to LinkedIn
You can add images and videos very easily to your LinkedIn profile page.
This means that you can illustrate your greatest achievements in the form of stunning images, videos and presentations.  You can add videos and images to the Experience, Summary and Education sections, but not yet to Skills and Expertise or Additional Information Sections.
How to do it!
  • Click ‘Profile’  from the menu at the top, then choose ‘Edit Profile’ . Under each of the entries in your Summary, Experience, and Education sections, is a new icon, a box with a cross. You can see this on the screenshot that I have taken from our own LinkedIn profile.
  • If you choose to add a link, type or paste the link to your content into the “Add a link” field. If you upload a file, select the file from your desktop. A picture of your content will display with the pre-filled title and description fields.

  • To edit the title and description, move your cursor over Profile at the top of your homepage and select Edit Profile. Scroll to the media sample you’d like to edit and click the pencil icon in the lower-right corner. Click inside the Title and Description fields to edit the text, then click Save.

  • You can also move media samples from one section to another. Do this by clicking the drop-down menu under “Move this media to” and choose the section of your profile you’d like to move it to. Then click Save. To rearrange items within the same section of your profile, click and drag them to the spot you want.

  • If you want to remove an image, presentation, document or video from your profile, scroll to the sample and click the pencil icon in its lower-right corner. Click “Remove this Media,” then click “Yes, remove it.”

So, don’t lag behind DO IT, put aside 15 minutes to implement this – you’d be mad to miss this FREE marketing exposure you can give yourself.

You can also do the same for Video.  Think how powerful the moving image would be – Testimonials from people recommending you.  Here at Ginger we are also produce and market Video.  Take a look at our sister site to find out about our Video Production.

Corporate Photographer Will Travel

Well what a busy month May was :-)  Corporate photographer will travel, some of the locations I shot in were Frome, Somerset, Reading Berkshire, Abingdon Oxfordshire, Oxford and Newbury but the furthest was Norwich in Norfolk.

There was a complete mix of subject matter as well, from Archtectural shots to Corporate Portraits and Product shots. Towards the end of the month I was able to catch up with a lot of the external work that had been piling up due to all the rain we had in April and early May.

This month I also shot a lot video for clients mainly to be used on websites. This was a mix of Videos for a large business park, Testimonial Videos and a Seminar Work Shop. Of course all the videos will be optimised to drive traffic to their websites and help the sites climb the search engines.

Newbury Corporate Photographer Rained Upon

As a Newbury Corporate Photographer I am anything but local with upcoming shoots in Norwich, Bournemouth and London. Photographing lifestyle in Norwich, a building in Bournemouth and portraits in London.

I have passed on a five day shoot in Libya that I was offered. The foreign office adviced aganst all travel to Libya and as I have plenty of work here I didn’t see the need to run the risk of getting kidnapped, mugged or tortured!

The weather in the past couple of weeks and certainly for the next week has rained on my parade a little bit! With shoots having to be postponed until we get fairer weather.

I have also just received a commision to produce ten Corporate Videos for a large property company. There is talk of a photo shoot in Germany and I am awaiting confirmed dates for a shoot in the Caribbean in June. So the next couple of months is going to be very busy.

I take on Stills photography and Business video shoots  all over the UK, Europe and further afield. People, products, locations and services made to look their best!
